The Lafayette Commodore Volleyball team played in the state championship game for the fourth time in five years. Facing the Sumrall Bobcats (Coming into this game 27-5), the Commodores were set to face one of their toughest opponents yet. As the game started, it was all Sumrall, as they jumped out to an early 12-6 lead. The Commodores fought hard but ultimately dropped the first set 25-22. The second was oddly similar to the first. The Bobcats got off to a commanding start, and ultimately, the Commodores couldn’t recover from the early deficit, losing this set 25-13. The Commodores, being on sweep alert, proceeded to get going. Commodores jumped to a quick 5-0 lead and dominated this set. Bobcats kept it interesting, but ultimately the Commodores would pick up their first set win 25-20. The fourth continued for the Commodores’ dominance, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, and a surge of momentum began. Commodores would control their way through a hard-fought set and tie the match at two with a final score of 25-22. Now facing a fifth and final set, it was crunch time for the Commodores. The set started out back and forth. Sumrall jumped to an 8-6 lead, but the Commodores fought and continued to make hard-fought plays. Game point down the Commodores had the opportunity but ultimately we would fall short, resulting in a brutal final score of 15-13. Coming just short of the historic comeback. The Commodores, despite the loss, held their heads after having another amazing season, and with a lot of young production returning for this team. Expectations will always be high for Lafayette Volleyball.
