Starting October 30th, 2025, the reigning 5A state champions, the Lafayette Girls soccer team, will open at the William L. Buford Stadium – Oxford, MS for the  25-26 season. With a new team comes new challenges and changes.

An unknown change in 5A-Region 1 district is Corinth High School dropping to 4A and is now replaced with Caledonia. In the past year, Caladonia was first in the 4A district, with a 14-5 record. On December 11th, 2025, the girls will play Caledonia Varsity and JV at home.

With two of the top players graduating, striker Caroline Perkins and goalie Andrea Rhea. The team can look forward to having a competitive season.

However, the team returns senior Lizah Holland, one of the best Defense players. She has been part of the team since her eighth-grade year. She has proven to be a viable asset to the group. While she may not be continuing her soccer career in college. She also helped the volleyball team to state this past year and committed to the Gulf Coast College Volleyball team.

This year, the girls gained eight new players, also with up to eight newly available open slots on the varsity team. These girls practice at a very high level; with the expectation to be amazed at their athletic abilities. The team is held to a high athletic standard, and they practice with high expectations from scrimmages to fitness tests to team bonding with all the hard work and dedication.

The girls’ soccer team made it to state with the help of the amazing and talented coaches. Melinda Scruggs, the head coach, has helped the team win five times! Also, another asset to the team is Lance McGregor. With their dedication and determination, they have helped shape the team to play and overcome high-stress level games. One of our newer additions to the team is Sydney Stephen. She has been so vital to the team, from exercises in the weight room to her brilliant sessions on the field. There are high expectations for this upcoming season for the Lafayette Girls’ soccer team.
