On Jun. 20, 2025, Sony Pictures Animation released KPop Demon Hunters, a Netflix original movie. With a PG rating, KPop Demon Hunters is a visually stunning movie that is entertaining for the whole family. The film received a 7.7/10 on IMDb.com.
The film follows a popular KPop girl group called Huntr/x, composed of Rumi (Arden Cho and EJAE), Mira (May Hong and Audrey Nuna), and Zoey (Ji-Young Yoo and Rei Ami). The girls live double lives, fighting demons while entertaining fans and dominating the music charts. Centuries before the setting of the movie, demons tormented humans and fed their souls to their leader, Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun). Three women rise to become demon hunters, fighting off demons and sealing them away with a magical barrier powered by their voices and the support of their fans, known as the Honmoon.
The movie starts with Huntr/x completing the final show of their world tour. After a short break, Huntr/x releases their new single titled “Golden”, a song they created in hopes of turning the Honmoon gold and strengthening it. Just as they are about to perform the single for the first time live, Rumi starts to lose her voice due to her being part demon, a secret she had been hiding from those around her with the help of Celine (Yunjin Kim), her mom’s friend, who took Rumi in after her mother passed away. Rumi’s father was a demon, resulting in her having the marks and slowly losing herself. Celine told Rumi as a child that turning the Honmoon gold would erase her marks and she would finally be normal.
Gwi-Ma, enraged by the failure of his demons to take down the girls and feed him souls, sends a demon named Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop and Andrew Choi) to form a demon boy band and take the spotlight away from Huntr/x. Taking their fans would mean taking their support and destroying the Honmoon. In return, Gwi-Ma promises to erase Jinu’s memories so he will no longer be tormented by the decisions he made in the past before becoming a demon. The new boyband, The Saja Boys, quickly becomes a hit sensation, on the road to overtaking Huntr/x in terms of popularity. Baby Saja (Danny Chung), Abby Saja (Sungwon Cho and NECKWAV), Romance Saja (Joel Kim Booster and samUIL Lee), and Mystery Saja (Alan Lee and Kevin Woo) work with Jinu to tear open the Honmoon and release Gwi-Ma.
Using their voices to control the crowds, the Saja Boys hold a final concert after successfully manipulating and breaking up Huntr/x at the Idol Awards, causing the Honmoon to break. The Saja Boys lured fans into the stadium where Gwi-Ma was waiting to take their souls. The girls have to put aside their differences and reform their bond to defeat Gwi-Ma and seal a new Honmoon for good.
The animation and colors were beautiful, and the symbolism behind the characters and scenes was well thought out and well done. The story was well-written, and despite being a movie made for kids, the film is enjoyable for people of all ages. The songs were catchy, and the voice acting was impactful. There were many questions left unanswered at the end of the film, but a second movie was confirmed. Overall, this movie deserves a 5/5 for the stunning animation and impactful storyline.
