Hey Commodores, let’s travel back in time to a Spring 2008 edition of The Cruiser, back when colors, arts, having fun, and being playful were what every Commodore did, where every student had a jacket for every sport and laughing was a must.
The art students were painting hallways, dabbling with paper mache, and making pinhole cameras out of pringles cans. The students were making animal masks out of paper mache and the students said that it was a fun project even with all of the mess. Some Commodores were skeptical but the pinhole pringles cameras worked and the pictures were being developed in a dark room
Just down the hall, freshman met with author Margaret McMullan, who was born in Mississippi but moved north when she was 10. She returned for high school, but often got picked on for her ‘yankee’ accent. Due to this teasing, McMullan began to write about Mississippi’s characteristics as a way to fill her free time. She soon discovered that writing was her passion and eventually became an author. During her speech McMullan gave the freshman several words of advice. She told them to write what they felt because “stories don’t care, they just want to be written.” She also told them that to begin and finish a story, you have to love the act of writing.
The outdoor product of the month, which was a three pack of turkey diaphragm calls, had stellar reviews that said they were the raspiest and most realistic turkey sounds (and yes, they are on Amazon).
The softball team improved greatly over the past few years, and even though they didn’t make it to playoffs, they destroyed Oxford! The tennis team finished the season 5-7, winning 4-2 in the district. This was a slight disappointment to coach Marty Pearson since she wanted the team to break even, but the team finished 3rd in the district and the boys and girls doubles team did very well at playoffs.
Some of our former commodore’s favorite songs were, “Lollipop” by Lil Wayne, “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice, “Never Land” by Lyfe Jennings, and “Johnny and June” by Johnny Cash.
