The Lafayette volleyball team beat Lake Cormorant three to one at this year’s North Half Championship. A new achievement for the team, this win earns them a spot in the 2021 MHSAA Volleyball Championships.
Although Lake Cormorant ended the first set with a five point lead, Lafayette made a strong comeback later in the game, maintaining a big lead throughout the second and third sets. Lake Cormorant pulled ahead early in the fourth set with a score of seven to zero, but Lafayette quickly caught up, winning the last set twenty-five to thirteen.
Player Presley Thomas elaborated upon one of the tensest moments. “When we came down seven points, it was a challenge to get back up, but we managed.” The Commodores quickly recovered and ended the set with a twelve point lead.
Moving into this match, the team held three previous wins against Lake Cormorant this season, boosting their confidence as well as preparing them for the semi-final.
“I think it made the team who we are. We learned how to fight back, we learned how to see what teams are bringing to the court and adapt to it. It’s definitely made us a better team,” remarked Lafayette’s head volleyball coach Zoe Storck in reference to their previous wins.
Having never won the North Half Championship before, the volleyball team was ecstatic at the prospect of heading to state championships.
“I’m just on top of the world,” said player Hudson Lindsey. “I’m so proud of all my teammates, our coaches. We’ve really become a family over the season and I just could not feel better right now.”
Overall, the volleyball team performed outstandingly, utilizing their strengths to defeat the Gators with tremendous skill.

“We had a lot of really good blocks, a lot of good deals from Harmony Jackson, and our serving was really, really good… We’ve been preparing for this all season and my girls are super, super ready. We’re excited to make our first big state championship appearance,” Storck said after the game.
With this momentous win under their belt, the team will head down to Clinton to face the Vancleave Bulldogs in the 2021 MHSAA Volleyball Championships on Saturday, October 23.
