For their first meet of the season, the Lafayette Girls Varsity Cross Country team placed second in the Tupelo Christian Preparatory School Twilight 5k. Junior Mia Dawson led the team with a time of 21:00, getting her second place in the Varsity Girls 4A-6A division.
Freshman Maine Lund followed close behind, snagging 8th place with a time of 22:48. Senior Collyn Lewis placed twelfth, sophomore Della Shackelford placed twentieth, and sophomore Sarah Kegley placed forty-third, rounding off the top 5 Lafayette runners with a time of 27:54.
For the Lafayette team, starting off the season on this route was a challenge.
“This was probably the hardest course I’ve ever run on, especially being the first meet of the year,” said Shackelford, a returning runner for Lafayette.
This year’s meet was held roughly a month earlier than the 2019 meet, increasing the heat for the cross country teams. Combined with the high elevation and packed start, the meet proved to be a tricky starting point for a number of runners.
Despite the difficult start the Commodores were given, they performed stupendously.
“I’m excited for this cross country season,” said Kegly, “I can’t wait for all the good things we’ll accomplish this… season!”
The team’s next meet will be at French Camp Academy on September 11, 2021.
