Ms. Meghan Besaw is our newest foreign language teacher. Though she has only been here for a semester, she said she has felt so welcome.

She teaches Latin here at LHS, and is part of the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program at Ole Miss. She graduated there with a degree in Secondary English Education and an endorsement in Latin. She first taught English at New Albany Middle School, however, she decided she was more passionate about Latin, so came to Lafayette for her second year of teaching.

During the 2018-2019 school year, Besaw was a student-teacher here. She said, “I enjoyed the students and school atmosphere so much that I wanted to return.”

Throughout her childhood, she lived in various states and cities in the South, because her father was in the army.

She said, “Some of my high school teachers were so integral to my process of figuring out who I am that I wanted to take their encouragement and welcoming personalities and continue to share that with students.” She added, “Teenagers spend so much time at school; they deserve adults in the building who are invested in them! (And Lafayette teachers really are!)”

She also said, “I find it so fun to learn about people, their experiences, and how their world view was different from ours. Teaching Latin is a great way to continue being excited about learning, while also being able to share that passion with others. Knowledge should always be shared!”

Lastly, her favorite part of being a teacher is getting to know her students and celebrating who they are.
