Due to COVID-19, wearing a mask is mandatory in many places. Because of this, a controversial question has come up: Should we be wearing masks or not?
On October 2nd, governor Tate Reeves lifted the mask mandate on the state of Mississippi. Nevertheless, the mayor of Oxford has decided that masks will still be mandatory in the city.
Although wearing a mask can protect a person from catching the virus, some have concerns about the other ways wearing a mask can affect a person’s health. Masks can make breathing difficult for a person with a lung condition. People with asthma, for example, can have trouble breathing while wearing a mask.
When asked how asthma affects her breathing while wearing a mask, sophomore Harley Rogalski replied, “It’s pretty hard because when you’re walking around, it’s hard to take deep breaths.”
On the other hand, wearing a mask could be even more important for a person with a lung condition because catching the virus could have worse effects. A mask can be important for everyone to stay safer when around other people.
Sophomore Mia Dawson says, “I think masks should be mandatory because it slows the spread of COVID and it’s respectful towards everyone, especially the vulnerable people.”
COVID-19 has caused everyone’s way of living to be altered. Masks are now a big part of their lives, whether one agrees with wearing one or not.
