It’s the holidays, and that can only mean one thing: Hallmark is back at it with their Christmas movies. Middle age moms are already flocking in droves to Hallmark to binge-watch that one movie about a woman getting stuck with some guy that she will fall in love with by the end of the movie and leave her boyfriend or not return to her job that hasn’t been mentioned since the beginning of the movie.
With a total of 136 movies and counting, one could concur that Hallmark goes a little overboard with the whole Christmas thing. They like to flood the market with new movies that look oddly similar to what everyone has already seen before just to make a little bit of profit. No one wants to see a businesswoman from New York get stranded in the middle of nowhere and fall in love with a guy on Christmas Eve for the tenth time already this year. They will claim it’s a different story, but we all know Jolly, or some other Christmas themed name, will end up falling in love with Brian or whatever generic name they may choose. It doesn’t matter, he just has to look like a 10/10. Then at the end of the movie, after having to decide to stay in the small town or return for her big promotion in the city, she will make a big scene, decide to lose her job, become a designer for the town, and date Mr. Good looking.
Hallmark is making these movies for cheap also with some movies being made at just 2 million dollars. They are also made in about 2 weeks, so mass-producing movies is easy for them if they start in the summer. The only set back is finding new set to us, but that hasn’t stopped them from using the same place again.
One could ask “if it isn’t good, why do so many people watch it?” The answer to this is very simple. Hallmark gives the public exactly what it wants. Name one Hallmark movie without snow, family, decorations, and everyone dressing like it’s an ugly Christmas sweater contest. The public wants to see a happy traditional view of Christmas, and Hallmark is the perfect embodiment of that. The perfect world that Hallmark creates is what people crave, and a lot of people can’t get enough of it, returning again and again for more every time Countdown to Christmas starts.
No one ever knows, maybe this year we will see something different from the Christmas giants with a few different plots. May you have a merry Christmas, happy holidays, and hopefully better movies to watch.
