
Girls:
The last time the Lafayette Commodores and the Oxford Chargers met was on Dec. 14. Lafayette won the game 48-28. Oxford walked into Lafayette’s gym feeling confident with a nine-game winning streak. In order for Oxford to win the next Crosstown Classic, they will need to slow down lafayette’s trio — Azariah Buford, Mariah Holland, and Kimaya Dixon. The starters combined with 42 points. Buford with 15, Holland with 12, and Dixon with 15. Oxford’s, Ashley Epps, missed the first game, resting an ankle injury. The Chargers play really well at home. With Lafayette winning the first game, Oxford will come out ready to play.
The second time the Lafayette Commodores and the Oxford Chargers met end just like the first. The Lady Commodores defeated the Lady Chargers with a score of 60-43.
Oxford was able to keep up with the Commodores, ending the first quarter 11-10. Lafayette scored 20 points in the second quarter of the game, taking the lead into the half 30-21.
In the third quarter, Oxford held Lafayette to shoot much harder shots. Oxford was able to cut the lead to five points ,but they were not able to get back in the game.
Junior, Kimaya Dixon played well for the Commodores. At halftime, Dixon had 18 of Lafayette’s 30 points. She now have a new career-high of 32 points.
The Lady Commodores were able to win again to their crosstown rival by a final score of 60-43.
Lafayette’s record is now 18-2 and ranked No.11 in the state.
Boys:
The Oxford Chargers beat Lafayette in the first meeting back in December 67-45. Four Chargers were in double figures. Tykel Owens led Oxford in scoring with 19 points. Kylen Gillon led Lafayette with 10 points. Lafayette entered the game on Tuesday with a three-game losing streak.
Lafayette lost the second game 71-46.
Lafayette had a great start, leading 7-6. Oxford took control making the score 32-19 at the half. Lafayette was more competitive offensively in the second half of the game, but never lead.
Oxford went for most loose balls and beat the Commodores in transition. A couple times, Tykel Owens and Kaylan Blackmon connected on alley-oops. Lafayette settled mostly for jump shots while Oxford got many points closer to the basket.
Oxford won the rivalry game 71-46. This loss gave the Commodores a record of 5-15.
